Breaking Down the SPORT Modular Monofin Carbon

Breaking Down the SPORT Modular Monofin Carbon

Discover the monofin you can take apart, and why one pair of foot pockets is all you'll need for both your monofin and your bifins.

While Molchanovs offers the PRO Monofin for record-breaking performances and the CORE Silicone Monofin for building and training technique, there was something missing for the freedivers in the middle: those who want a monofin for longer, deeper performances but don't need the full customization that comes with a hefty price tag. So Molchanovs developed a monofin that fits perfectly in the middle: the SPORT Modular Monofin Carbon.

It’s built from three separable components: an angled carbon blade with integrated rails, a pair of detachable SPORT Silicone Foot Pockets, and a plastic reinforcement plate that bolts the two together.

The foot pockets are what make it different. SPORT Silicone Foot Pockets already take interchangeable SPORT Bifins 3 carbon or fiberglass blades; now, SPORT Modular Monofin Carbon brings a monofin blade into that same system. One pair of foot pockets now covers two freediving disciplines.

Conventional monofins are assembled in production, where the blade is bonded to the foot pockets, and the fin leaves the factory as a single unit. The fit, size, and repair path are fixed for the entire life of the product. But with the SPORT Modular Monofin Carbon, assembly is made by the owner, and the options are endless.

One Pair of Foot Pockets

A freediver who already owns SPORT Bifins 3 can purchase just the SPORT Modular Monofin Blade Carbon and use their existing SPORT Silicone Foot Pockets for the monofin. That same freediver can also travel more easily, carrying disassembled bifin blades, a monofin blade, and one pair of foot pockets instead of two, saving up to 1.3kg (2.9lb) of luggage.

Different Foot Pockets for Different Purposes

Freedivers normally have to choose one foot pocket fit for their monofin: a comfortable fit that suits long training sessions but gives up some energy transfer from foot to blade, or a tight fit that maximizes transfer but only stays comfortable for a short time. With the SPORT Modular Monofin Carbon, a freediver can own two pairs and use one for training and the other for performance dives.

Freediving schools can also easily offer monofins to students with only a few blades and a spread of foot pocket sizes.

Easier Repair

When it comes to accidents, if a component breaks and needs repair or replacement under warranty, only that component needs to be shipped, reducing shipping weight and fees.

The SPORT Silicone Foot Pockets are molded from hypoallergenic, UV-resistant silicone, with a dedicated right and left side. They come in six sizes from 34-35 to 44-45, in black or white, and in two widths: Standard for bare feet, and Wide for diving with socks.

An open-heel design with an anatomically shaped heel strap lets the foot arch and stretch through the full kick, while built-in arch support holds it in position. Thick, rigid side stabilizers enclose the blade and its water rails for control over every kick. The silicone is rated for all water temperatures and holds its shape down to -30°C (-22°F). A pair weighs from 1.04kg (2.29lb) in size 34-35 to 1.3kg (2.87lb) in 44-45.

To assemble, the blade slides into a front slot on the foot pocket until the mounting holes align. An upper plate fits over the toe section, a lower plate sits underneath, and four screws, two per pocket, secure the assembly. It takes about five minutes and requires only a Phillips screwdriver.

The carbon blade is resin transfer molded and set at a 28° angle to the foot pockets. This position maintains a straight line from a freediver's shins to the blade, keeping the feet neutral and the blade streamlined with maximum power transfer. It includes integrated rails to stabilize kicks and keep each stroke efficient and consistent. The blade comes in two stiffness levels, with a corresponding size for each.

Freedivers can choose from two blade designs: the Molchanovs logo in white, or the classic stripes in black or white.

The SPORT Modular Monofin Carbon is the missing piece from the Molchanovs monofin lineup: genuine monofin performance for freedivers who don’t need a fin built to their measurements, in a design that comes apart and travels with the bifins they already own.
